Episode 44: The Rule of 33% by Jamie Johns

In this episode of The Wize Guys Podcast, Jamie Johns discusses the concept of the rule of 33%. The rule of 33% states that your time should equally be spent on the following: 1. with mentors (people that challenge you); 2. with your peers (those on the same level as you); and 3. with people who you can mentor and guide.

Quotations:

“Don't forget, spend a third of your time with someone, 10 x your most important rule so that you can feel outside your comfort zone and challenged, and they will make you a better person. The second rule of 33 is to spend the time with your peers and colleagues, people at your same level, and last but not least, spend a third of your time giving back and helping other people because in the process you'll actually get more out of it yourself and consolidate your own thinking and clarity and get laser thoughts.”  - Jamie Johns

Hi guys. It's Jamie Johns here. I'm the CEO and founder of Sky Accountants and also one of the Co-founders of Wize Mentoring.

I just wanted to share with you a concept that we talk about at Wize Mentoring called the Rule of 33. The rule of 33 says that you should spend a third of your time with a mentor, someone you aspire to, someone you look up to when you say, ‘I wish I could have what they've got.’ They're the typical person who might earn 10 x what you earn.

For example, they might be a salesperson who makes 20 sales a day, and at the moment you are making one sale. So you should spend a third of your time with this mentor, someone that you emulate, someone that you look up to, and it's the most essential rule of 33%.

The second rule of 33 is to spend a third of your time with peers and colleagues so that you can share ideas and you can get ideas from others and what's working for them and what isn't working, and collaborate together so that you can work on continuous improvement. That's the second rule of 33, and it's just important in this day and age where a lot of alienation is occurring, where people aren't talking to one another. But we have the technology to come together, and in a community of like-minded people like Wize Mentoring really fulfills that second rule of 33, the last rule of 33% is about helping and giving back to others. It’s so important that you take what you learn from the first 33% to the second 33%, and then give back and mentor other people who at B, who are below your level, and it's found by psychologists that we retain around 5% of what we read and 10% of maybe what we write, but it's proven that we retain about 90% of what we have to teach. And when you teach others, you really have to know what you're talking about. So I encourage you and everyone I meet to live by the rule of 33%.

Don't forget, spend a third of your time with someone, 10 x your most important rule so that you can feel outside your comfort zone and challenged, and they will make you a better person. The second rule of 33 is to spend the time with your peers and colleagues, people at your same level, and last but not least, spend a third of your time giving back and helping other people because in the process you'll actually get more out of it yourself and consolidate your own thinking and clarity and get laser thoughts. Okay?

Hopefully, this has helped. So live the rule of 33% and fulfill your full potential. Bye for now!
